Central Luthern Church Death Penalty Repeal Proclamation

Whereas there is a movement in Oregon to repeal the Death Penalty and our Bishop, David Brauer-Ricke, has addressed the issue in a letter to the Lutheran churches of the Oregon Synod,

we, the members of Central Lutheran Church, do hereby declare our support for the repeal of the death penalty in Oregon for the following reasons

Many studies have shown that the use of the death penalty does not prevent or reduce crimes of violence and passion.

It is a violation of International principles of human rights and research has shown that a majority of those on death row suffer from mental illness and emotional traumas and are more often poor and poorly educated making it more difficult for them to mount a credible defense.

With more modern technology involving DNA evidence, more of those inmates assigned to death row have been found to be innocent of the crimes for which they have been condemned.

The use of the Death Penalty does not really address the issues of accountability and obligations the perpetrator of a crime has toward the victim(s) or their family.

It is immoral and harmful to those who must engage in implementing the execution process as there is no "humane" way to execute another human being

The use of the Death Penalty rests more on a desire for punishment and revenge and excludes the possibility or even the consideration of forgiveness and healing. It therefore, hardens a society and adds violence  to violence

Above all, as people of faith, we follow one who came that we all might have life abundant, who teaches us to give and affirm  life, not take it away.  We believe the use of the death penalty is morally indefensible.  We seek, therefore, a more nonviolent society thatfocuses more on rehabilitation, restoration, healing, and justice for all without the use of a very costly, ineffective and unnecessary death penalty.

Therefore, we support the repeal of the death penalty and call upon the Oregon legislature to do so.
